Toxic Jerky Treats Now Linked to More than 1,000 Dog Deaths

(via the Vet Depot blog)

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recently released another warning about the danger of jerky treats produced in China. The number of dog deaths related to toxic treats surpassed 1,000 as of May 1, 2014.

According to the FDA, more than 4,800 reports of illnesses related to jerky treat consumption have occurred since 2007, and it appears the issue is an ongoing problem. Authorities have not yet been able to pinpoint what exactly is causing the kidney related disease, but the majority of cases do seem to be linked to jerky treats imported from China.

If your pet experiences a decrease in appetite, increased thirst, vomiting, or diarrhea after consuming a jerky treat, consult with a veterinarian immediately. Jerky treat related illnesses can be reported to the FDA by calling 1-888-INFO-FDA.

                                   An Open Letter To Jake

We wanted to thank you for sharing your life with us.  We know every story has a beginning and an end - it's what happens between the first sentence and the last sentence that is important.

You were so photogenic, and every picture of you seemed regal; but we knew better:  you weren't the king, you were the jester.  Bouncing up stairs, running to your bed each night and wriggling on your back with paws waving at the ceiling (you really looked forward to that memory-foam bed).  Answering each singing truck with a your own song (we can't now hear a fire truck without thinking of you).

You visited countless homes and dozens of meet and greets as an ambassador for all Greyhounds.  How many who met you wanted this "floor model?"  You loved people petting you, you loved children, and you shamelessly doted on your mother.  Now that you have unwillingly left us, know we miss you and thank you for sharing your story with us.  Your bed right now is full of memory foam.  Sleep well, Jake.

From the "Dogington Post": “Purina’s Beneful Poisoned My Dogs”

by Caroline Ashford of the "Dogington Post."

This week I spoke with a man who alleges that his dog nearly died from the food he was feeding. He told me the story of what happened to him, and provided two videos; one that shows his dog while being fed Purina’s Beneful dry dog food, and another video taken after they stopped feeding this product. Video links are at the end of this article.
