Glad Press'nSeal - Great Protective Paw/Leg Wrap!

After Keith's fractured leg was splinted by Akiko at the Albany Animal Hospital, she showed me a neat way to wrap the splint to protect it from getting wet.  She showed me a great product called Press'nSeal, which is manufactured by the fine folks who gave us Glad bags.

It's incredibly convenient and easy to use.  Keith simply steps onto the sticky side of the sheet of wrap, and then I wrap the sheet around his splint.  PRESTO!  Takes all of 20 seconds to wrap. Splint is protected while Keith is outside "doing his business."  Since it's leak-proof, the wetness on the grass won't absorb into the splint.  Pretty cool, eh?  Sure beats the old trick of tying an IV bag over the splint.

Here's an example of how Press'nSeal can be used:

Here it is wrapped around Keith's splint.  And yeah, it stays wrapped until you remove it.  Highly recommended!

Keith Has A Broken Leg!

This past Wednesday evening, my Greyhound, Keith, broke his leg.  The fracture is located in his left front leg, between his elbow and wrist.  Since Keith is almost 10 years old, I feared the worst....cancer.  With the help of "Team Greyhound" members Jed Irvine and Laurie Barshay, Keith was transported to the Albany Animal Hospital...after hours, of course...and Dr. Ken Fletcher.

Original Splint
Dr. Fletcher sedated Keith and took x-rays of the break on two sides of the bone.  Fortunately, it was not a compound fracture and the broken bones were aligned almost perfectly straight.  Dr. Fletcher did not definitively see an indication of cancer.  He splinted the leg, instructing me to return to the clinic on Thursday to have it properly re-splinted (by AAH vet tech Akiko).  One of the other veterinarians at the clinic, Dr. Eric Glaze, also viewed the x-rays and does not suspect cancer as the cause for the fracture.

Re-Splinted

Keith will now have to wear the splint for 8 weeks as he recovers from the fracture.  My eternal gratitude goes out to Dr. Fletcher (great vet and overall good guy!) and the staff at Albany Animal Hospital, Jed & Laurie, as well as Rachel & Eddy Ostrander, who also made the trip to the Albany Animal Hospital to support Keith and I, and Jane-Ann Phillips, for much-needed moral support.  Thanks, everyone!

Irish Racers Are Coming!

Irish Retired Racers are Coming!

GPA is excited for our new partnership with Flying Irish Greyhounds!  As the availability of greyhounds continues to decrease in the US, this provides us with an opportunity to help hounds in countries like Ireland where supply still outweighs demand for pets.  Four beautiful Irish Greyhounds will be arriving in the next few weeks, including Dutch, who is pictured below.  If you'd like to help with the cost of transporting and vetting for these hounds, please click here
