'Tis The Season: Poinsettias and Mushrooms
Oregon has entered its rainy season, and with it, mushroom season. Mushroom toxicity does occur in dogs and it can be fatal if certain species of mushrooms are eaten. Amanita phalloides is the most commonly reported severely toxic species of mushroom in the US but other Amanita species are toxic. Symptoms include abdominal pain, drooling, liver damage, kidney damage, vomiting, diarrhea, convulsions, coma, death. For more on the dangers of mushrooms, click here.
Additionally, we have entered the Christmas season. Many folks traditionally bring Poinsettia plants into their homes. These plants are probably the most popular holiday plant and are easily recognizable by their large red, white, pink, or mottled leaves. While not highly toxic, Poinsettia plants do contain a thick, milky irritant sap. In general, it would take ingestion of a large amount of this plant to see possible clinical signs in your pet. Signs could include vomiting, anorexia and depression. The symptoms are generally self-limiting and treatment is rarely needed. Your Vet may recommend limiting food and water intake for 1 or 2 hours if your pet is suspected of becoming sick after ingestion of Poinsettias. Please exercise caution if bringing a Poinsettia plant into your home this holiday season.

Corvallis Greyhound Walk - Sunday 11/18 - Crystal Lake Park
This is a reminder that our walk this month is going to be this Sunday, September 18th at Crystal Lake Sports Fields/Willamette Park in south Corvallis. We’ll meet in the Crystal Lake parking area at 1:30PM and walk the shaded trail along the Willamette River.
It looks like the weather will be greyt for a walk. Temps will be in the low 70's so our greys will not be too hot. Barry's dog Stoker is going to be celebrating his 10th birthday so we will have Frosty Paws for any Greyhound that would like to join in the celebration.
If you need directions you can call Barry (541-753-1339) or Mary Lou (541-688-1406) or click here.

All American, Fabulous, Fantastic, Anyone-Can-Join Fourth of July Parade - July 4th in Corvallis
Once again it’s time for the All American, Fabulous, Fantastic, Anyone-Can-Join Fourth of July Parade, which starts 10:30 a.m. and originates at Central Park in downtown Corvallis….on Monday, July 4th, of course!
All greyhounds/sight hounds and their families are invited to assemble at 10:00 a.m. at the Corvallis Arts Center, located in Central Park (the same location as last year). If tradition continues, the route will proceed east along Monroe Avenue from Eighth Street to First Street, then south along First Street to Adams Avenue, then west one block to Second Street, where it continues south to the skate park. This year, those of us with dogs are asked to line up behind those not walking their pets.
Bring water for your pooches and be prepared for lots of "ooooohs" and "ahhhhs" as we walk the parade route. Dashes to the sidelines for lots of pets and hugs (for the greys, of course!) are encouraged!
Those of you who took part in the parade last year know how much fun this parade can be, as the Willamette Valley Greyhound Lovers were one of the most popular participants in past parades!
This is a GREYT opportunity to promote Greyhound adoption and share the joy of having a Greyhound as a member of the family.

Thirty years ago, there were more than 60 greyhound race tracks across the country. Now there are fewer than 25. April Greyhound Walk - Sunday, April 17th
Let’s enjoy spring by looking for eggs and a stray bunny or two along the way on our walk around Walterville Pond at 1:30 on Sunday April 17th. Drive east on Hwy 126 from Springfield; at mile 13 there is a church on the right side of the road and the canal’s coming along on the left. Cross the canal and take a left. You’ll drive in the opposite direction from the way you came to a small parking lot at the pond. It only takes about a half hour to walk around the pond but we could also walk along the canal. See you there!

Keeping Your Lawn Pet Safe
Many of us hire lawn care professionals to help bring an emerald green shade to our grass. But when that same lawn is used by your pooch for play, rest and a place to potty, then special care needs to be taken to make sure that any lawn sprays used are pet-safe.
Many commercial lawn sprays contain herbicides or pesticides which can be very dangerous. Common fertilizers can also cause allergic reactions in some dogs. As those first signs of spring abound, now may be the time to make the switch to organic fertilizers. Common organic fertilizers include bone meal, kelp, seaweed and ever-popular manure. Fortunately, many landscape companies are becoming more aware of the increasing consumer demand for pet- and people-safe lawns and they are utilizing safe grass treatments.
