April is Adopt-A-Greyhound Month!

GPA-NW will be hosting a Greyhound Meet & Greet at Animal Crackers Pet Supply in Corvalis on Saturday, April 11th.  See separate blog entry for details!

April is National Adopt-a-Greyhound Month, an annual initiative designed to raise awareness about the need for loving homes for retired racing greyhounds. This month highlights the gentle, low-energy nature of these dogs, often called "45 mph couch potatoes," and promotes adoption from specialized rescue groups.

Key Aspects of Greyhound Adoption Month:
  • Significance: With ongoing racing track closures, including international tracks located in Ireland and Australia, thousands of retired racers need permanent homes.
  • Breed Characteristics: Known for being docile, quiet, affectionate, and suited for apartment living despite their size, as they often prefer lounging.
  • Celebration & Action: Adoption agencies, such as Greyhound Pet Adoption - Northwest (gpa-nw.org), based right here in Oregon, use this time to facilitate adoptions, educate the public, and encourage volunteering.
  • How to Participate: Potential adopters are encouraged to contact rescue groups, foster dogs, or donate to rehabilitation efforts.
Often referred to as the "cat of the dog family," greyhounds make excellent pets and benefit from adoption efforts aimed at transitioning them from track life to home life.

March Greyhound Walk - Sunday, March 15th - Delta Ponds Loop Trail, Eugene

Sunday, March 15th, 1:30 PM
@ Delta Ponds Loop Trail
640 Goodpasture Island Rd, Eugene, OR

Let's meet at The Delta!

Delta Ponds is a 150-acre waterway site consisting of numerous ponds, channels, wetlands, and associated riparian areas. This unique natural area owned by the City of Eugene borders a stretch of the Willamette River, just downstream from Valley River Center. For many, it is a favorite spot for bird watching, fishing, and enjoying the outdoors.

The trail is now a 1.4 mile loop, which was completed in December 2024.

*Parking can sometimes be a challenge at the Delta Ponds, particularly on nice weather days. See parking info below.
Parking at Delta Ponds

There are two parking lots.
  • South lot: The south lot is unpaved and unmarked but a bit larger.
  • North lot: The north lot is paved with marked spaces and is small.
  • Business parking lots to the north of the ponds.

We will meet in the north (paved) parking lot. If you park in the south lot, you can get on the trail and walk north until you find the group. We will be walking towards you from the paved lot.

There are also some places to park in business lots to the north.

                      Where:  Oregon State University Campus

When: Sunday, March 1st, 2026 @ 1 PM

Let's enjoy a beautiful (according to the weather app forecast, anyway!) afternoon strolling the tree-lined walkways of the OSU Campus.  This will be a flat, non-strenuous walk with an opportunity to pause for coffee at the campus Dutch Bros if we so desire.  Total time of the walk will be approximately 1 hour.

...and we'll likely see a few Starships rolling around the campus, delivering food to the unambitious Sunday college students. ðŸ˜‰

We'll meet at 1:00 at the McNary Field parking lot (the "banana-shaped" lot), one half-block north of 14th & Monroe (see map below).  See you there!

Your Pet's Microchip May Now Be Useless After Chip Company Goes Out Of Business

You may think your pets are protected with microchips, but that might not be the case. One of the country's largest microchip companies went down the tubes a year ago, and the company took its registry of owners with it. Local shelters continue to find lost pets with unregistered chips, which are now useless to help reunite the animals with their owners.

How Fast Can Dogs Run?

How fast can dogs run? Sighthounds are among the fastest dogs on the planet, but what makes them so quick?

When you think of the fastest animals on earth, what do you think of? The cheetah? Gazelle? Peregrine falcon? Maybe a Thoroughbred racehorse? But have you ever thought about including the dog in that collection?

When it comes to how fast dogs can run, one particular breed stands out. Greyhounds have been known to run at an astonishing 45 miles per hour—and it’s not just top speed: many Greyhounds can hit over 43 miles per hour in just four-tenths of a mile, reaching a maximum acceleration of 9 miles per hour in approximately two seconds.

Dog Paw Cuts and Scrapes: How to Treat a Paw Injury

Your dog’s paw pads act much like the soles of sneakers, protecting your dog’s foot and cushioning each step. Paw pads are tough, but they can still be cut by sharp objects or worn off if your dog runs hard on rough terrain. What should you do when your dog cuts or tears a paw pad?
