How to Pet Proof Your Home for the Holidays
Tis’ the season for holiday decorations! If you’re a pet parent, it’s important to consider safety when decking the halls and trimming the tree.
- Do not leave lighted candles unattended – even for a second! A cat walking by could swish a tail into the flame and a rambunctious dog could knock a candle over. Consider flameless candles to avoid the fire risk.

Do Dogs Need Coats or Sweaters?
Q. How do I know if my dog needs a sweater or coat this winter?
A. I feel safe in saying that if you have a healthy, young Siberian Husky or Alaskan Malamute who's acclimated to the cold and has the glorious coat common in the Northern breeds, you likely won't have to invest in canine clothing for walks in the snow. In general, there are three kinds of dogs who benefit from the insulation provided by a sweater or coat, as well as the protection afforded by life as a pampered house pet:
- Small dogs
- Dogs who are elderly, chronically ill or both
- Greyhounds, Whippets and dogs of a similar thin body type, especially those with short fur.

Top 5 Dogs For Inner City Living
This is from the UK version of the Huffington Post.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Nearly all young professionals are now living in small city flats and apartments, but this clashes heavily with dog-lovers' need to have their own pup. That doesn't mean that having a dog is completely out of the question, but there needs to be some careful thought on what kind of dogs are suitable for small spaces. Here's a top 5 list of the best dogs for city living that should help, but remember that all dogs will require some form of exercise to keep them fit and healthy, alongside a lot of love and attention. These are ranked on their need for space, exercise and grooming.

Jerky treats recall prompted by pet illnesses, deaths
The FDA has urged pet owners and veterinarians around the U.S. to send in any information that could help them solve the mysterious illnesses related to jerky treats.
UPI) -- The Food and Drug Administration is asking for help from pet owners around the United States to solve the mysterious outbreak of illnesses related to jerky treats.
About 3,600 dogs and 10 cats in the U.S. have been sickened with jerky-related illnesses since 2007 and 580 pets have died. The treats are sold as jerky tenders or strips made of chicken, duck, sweet potatoes and/or dried fruit. And while most of the products were made in China, pet food manufacturers are not bound by U.S. law to list their ingredients' country of origin.

October Greyhound Walk
Last month we were going to walk at Dorris Ranch but decided to change our destination when we found out that there was going to be a run there at about the same time we were going to be there. We decided to go to the Talking Water Gardens in Albany instead. What a greyt day for those that defied the weather report. Despite a forecast of thunder storms, the rains held off until after we were in our cars heading home.
This month, October, we will be checking out the leaves as they are starting to change colors at Dorris Ranch in Springfield. We’ll meet in the parking lot at 1:30pm on October 20th and head out for a leisurely walk through the orchards. For more
information, visit http://www.willamalane.org/pages/parks/dorris.shtml.

Iams, Eukanuba dog and cat food recalled for potential salmonella contamination
Procter & Gamble and the U.S. Food & Drug Administration have announced a recall of multiple lots of dry dog food and cat food sold under the Iams and Eukanuba brands because of potential contamination from Salmonella.
Pet owners are at risk as well as pets if they handle contaminated dog or cat food or any surfaces exposed to the food and do not wash their hands thoroughly.
Although the recalled lots represent only 0.1 percent of all of P&G’s annual production, the Cincinnati-based company says the potentially contaminated food was shipped to multiple retailers across the United States.
The products include several different specialty Eukanuba and Iams dry dog foods and Iams dry cat foods, all with “Best By” dates during the first two weeks of November 2014. The full list of products and their lot numbers are available at this FDA web site: www.fda.gov/Safety/Recalls/ucm365154.htm

Come One, Come All To The Eugene Celebration Parade!
On Saturday, August 24th we once again will strut our stuff in the annual Eugene Celebration Parade, representing the joys of loving Greyhounds and promoting their adoption. Those of you who have marched with us in the past, know just how enjoyable it is, and how we are beloved by the enthusiastic parade-watchers that line the route. Warm applause are peppered with encouraging cheers of "Go Greyhounds!" and "Yay for Greyhounds!" The very first time I stepped onto the parade route 6 years ago, I was stunned by the rousing reception we received and had to look behind me to see who they were cheering for.
This year’s walk in the parade will be the 4th time (last year’s Eugene Celebration Parade and twice in the Corvallis 4th of July Parade) that we have used our new couch-featuring float (for our 45 MPH couch potatoes), constructed by the talented Doug Campoli. There is room for a few Greyhounds to ride atop the float, and the rest of us will walk with our dogs in the usual fashion.
The parade begins at 10 AM, so plan to gather with us at least 30 minutes prior to that, even earlier if you would like to help decorate the float. If you plan to attend, please email Mary Lou at: finiganm@comcast.net so she can send you the details of where and when to meet. What a fun and wonderful way to spread the word about Greyhound adoption.
See you there!

Heat Exhaustion and Greyhounds
Heat – A Killer
Heat will kill your dog. If it’s been hot, please use common sense and good judgment when you take your dog out in the heat. Greyhounds, because of their lack of fat and hair, don’t have the insulation other dogs have to the heat. They need to be in a controlled temperature environment of 68 - 72 degrees. The following are some guidelines.Continue reading...
