General Mills buys Blue Buffalo Pet Products for $8 billion: 'Wholesome' pet food proves appealing

Dogs might like Cheerios, but General Mills wants to give them more than that.

The Minneapolis-based food manufacturer, and maker of the famous breakfast cereal, has reached a deal to acquire Blue Buffalo Pet Products for about $8 billion.

The acquisition catapults General Mills into the growing market for natural pet foods made with what it called "wholesome" ingredients.

Wilton, Conn.-based Blue Buffalo sells a wide variety of pet food products, including veterinary diet goods, for a total of $1.275 billion in sales in 2017.

The deal comes as General Mills is seeking to reinvent itself as Americans gravitate away from packaged and processed foods.

FDA Expands Nationwide Dog Treats Recall

The U.S. FDA has announced Smokehouse Pet Products of Sun Valley, CA, is expanding its recall of its "Beefy Munchies" and "Beefy Bites" dog treats due to contamination with Salmonella bacteria.

J. M. Smucker has announced it is voluntarily withdrawing multiple dog food brands due to the presence of the drug pentobarbital.

Affected products include canned wet dog food versions of the following brands:

• Kibbles ‘N Bits
• Ol’ Roy
• Skippy

Greyhound Pet Adoption-Northwest will be at Petco stores in both Corvallis AND Springfield on Saturday, March 3rd, from 11AM-1PM along with some wonderful retired racing Greyhounds for you to meet.

Representatives from GPA-NW will be on hand to answer questions about Greyhounds and/or Greyhound adoption.
