Mary Lou Finigan Is Home From The Hospital!

As many of you know, Mary Lou Finigan, GPA Placement Volunteer covering the Eugene/Springfield area, was in the hospital for a few days for surgery.  We're happy to report that she is now back home where she belongs!  We wish Mary Lou a speedy recovery!

Here's a brief update from Mary Lou:

Hello to all!

I am home now, trying out my legs.. I can only sit up for 20 minutes at a time...ugh! But I get really exhausted so 20 minutes is good for now!

I have an appointment with the surgeon on Wednesday (7/13). So we will see what he has to say then...he was really pleased with what they did...😃

Miss Oletta and Quinn have been with me since I got home...Duffy, not so much! Two 4  legged, furry nurses are the best!

Corvallis “All-American Anyone-Can-Join Fabulous Fantastic 4th of July Parade”

Once again it’s time for the All American, Fabulous, Fantastic, Anyone-Can-Join Fourth of July Parade, which starts at 10AM at Central Park in Corvallis... on Monday, July 4th, of course!

All greyhound/sight hounds and their families are invited to assemble at 9:30AM at Central Park in front of the Arts Center in downtown Corvallis.
If tradition continues, the route will proceed east along Monroe Ave from Eighth Street to First Street, then south along First Street to Adams Avenue, then west one block to Second Street, where it continues south to the skate park.

Those of you who took part in the parade in past years know how much fun this parade can be, as the Willamette Valley Greyhound Lovers are one of the most popular participants.

As of this writing, the forecast temperature at parade time is around 75 degrees under mostly sunny skies.   Be sure to bring water!  Walking time in the parade is approximately 30 minutes.   Keith, Styx, Jester and I will definitely be participating.  Hope to see you there!

IMPORTANT UPDATE! May 14th Eugene Meet & Greet cancelled *plus* Sunday Walk Information

After talking with Petco on Tuesday, it was decided that we would not be having a Meet & Greet there tomorrow, Saturday May 14th (I scheduled this weekend in January) The kitties are coming and there won’t be any room for us …grrrrr.... we could be outside except it looks like it is going to rain and we don’t have a foster dog down here right now...frown emoticon...so we decided (Miss Oletta was adamant about this) that we are going to skip this month since we were at Pet Day last Saturday. Next month, on June 25th, we will be at Nature's Pet Market, 2864 Willamette with lots of adoptable greyhounds from 11 - 2pm.. See you then!

GREYHOUND WALK!! SUNDAY, MAY 15th, 1:30PM. We will be meeting at Clearwater Park in Springfield at 1:30pm on Sunday May 15th and walking along the Middle Fork Path along the river. Chances are good that the weather will be perfect for our walk. Take 42nd Street to Jasper Road, head east, then turn on Clearwater Lane to the parking lot. See you there!

Several Articles (And A KGUN Video) From Arizona Daily Star On The End Of Greyhound Racing in Arizona. Tucson Greyhound Park To End Greyhound Racing In June.

Arizona lawmakers vote to outlaw dog racing

PHOENIX — Dog racing in Arizona appears to be on its last legs.

Without dissent, state lawmakers gave final approval Saturday to legislation that outlaws the practice at the end of the year. The measure now goes to the governor.

The action came with the blessing of the owners of Tucson Greyhound Park, 2601 S. Third Ave., the lone remaining operating dog track in Arizona.

The practice of racing dogs has come under increased criticism and allegations about how the dogs are treated and what happens to the greyhounds that do not win.

But there’s another reason track owners are going along: They will get a guaranteed revenue stream for the next two years.

Legislation to close greyhound track would create need to place dogs

The fate of more than 420 greyhound dogs will play out over the next several months as rescue groups as far away as Canada offer to help.

While the last day of racing at Tucson Greyhound Park has not yet been made official, legislation passed unanimously by the Arizona Senate on Saturday means Arizona could soon sound its last call to the starting gate and join 39 other states in banning the sport. The Senate followed the Arizona House in unanimously approving the measure, which will now go to Gov. Doug Ducey for his signature.

Local rescue groups say they are already seeing more dogs coming out of the park for adoption, apparently as kennel owners anticipate the change.

Legislation ends dog racing in Arizona

PHOENIX (AP) — The Arizona Legislature has sent a bill ending dog racing in Arizona at the end of 2016 to Gov. Doug Ducey's desk.GUN

Saturday morning's 28-0 Senate vote followed a 54-0 vote in the House. The legislation will allow the state's lone remaining greyhound racing facility in Tucson to collect money from offering televised horse racing for at least two years.

The legislation was backed by the owners of Tucson Greyhound Park and allows them to continue to collect cash from off-track wagering at the track for two years.

If your dog’s retrieving skills amaze you, you soon might have a chance to test if your pooch is in fact, smarter than average.

A study published this month in the journal Intelligence found that dogs that aced one test seemed to do well on others – just like humans. It’s the first time that parallels have been drawn between human and canine intelligence.
